Title and Author:
For the first quarter independant reading, I read Wonder by R.J Palecio.I picked this book because I enjoy reading books ban out challenges. In this case the challenges of a child with a physical deformation and going to school. Genre:
The genre of this book is young adult. The book was made with the understanding that the reader was mature. The severity of Auggie’s situation must be handled in a mature way. Although the book is fairly comical, it does deal with a subject that appears in everyday life around the world.
Summary:
August(Auggie) Pullman was born with a deformity on his face. By the time he was 8 years old he had gone through as many surgeries as 10 people would have in a lifetime. From the time he was out of the hospital his mom had been homeschooling him. He had very few friends coming from the fact that he scares most children. It was time for him to grow up though. His parents enrolled him into Beecher Prep Middle School as that first step of growing. They had had many conversations with the Principle, Mr. Tushman, and had a tour set up for Auggie with a few previous students selected. The dray had come where Auggie to go to his tour. He was greeted by three children, Jack Will, Julian, and Charlotte. They were nice children and didn’t show their true feelings when they first saw Auggie’s face. The children all seemed nice but Auggie knew there were more than three people at the school. School started and of course he got made fun of and teased. Throughout the book there are many challenges that Auggie must face but he always gets through them with the help of his family and his courage. Will his courage pay off?
Major Conflict:
Courage is the main conflict as well as a major point. Like sated earlier, Auggie knew he was going to be accepted very well. He didn’t have courage. About two years before he started school, he would wear a astronaut helmet everywhere. He wore it for two years straight because couldn’t see him through. Auggie had always been protected by his mom, his dad, and his sister, Via. They all loved him and looked at him as a normal boy. Via had to depend on herself because her parents were always with Auggie. It was a part of her to be independent. But that independence is what Auggie needed. He needed to understand that there was nothing they could do because if there was they would have done it a long time back. He needed to pick his head and walk with pride. Even though the odds for his particular diagnoses were one in four million, he had to know that is what was given to him and he needed to find the good in that. As he started building that courage he was able to make jokes about himself and make others laugh not at him but with him. It was very plain to see when someone like Auggie goes from not speaking at all to laughing and playing with others that he has gained this courage. Major Ideas:
One big idea of the story was courage. Auggie had to put up with a lot. Not onlydid he have to deal with the children from his school, but children and adults everywhere. It is not every day when you see a child with scars all over his face, ear that are the size of a piece of popcorn, and eyes that all the wadown on his cheeks. Although Auggie did have people who loved him, it was always hard for him to feel accepted. Courage plays such a big role in this story because he could have given up multiple times. He had people pushing himand he built up courage to wear hearing aids that were huge. He built up courage to go over someone else’s house and to hold his head up when walking through the halls. It took a while to build this courage but when he finally achieved it there were brighter things to come. People noticed all the things he put up with and how he dealt with different situations. Auggie was no longer a child being protected by his family but and individual dealing with what was laid upon him. Another big idea from the book was friendship. Auggie and his family already knew it was going to be hard for him to make friends. They whey knew all of this but they were used to people gasping and nudging each other when they saw him. They knew people didn’t want to touch or look at him. They knew all of that but it was time to let Auggie go. Auggie thought that Jack Will, Charlotte, and Julian would be his friends. Soon after, he discovered that Julian would not be his friend. Charlotte and Jack Will were the only ones left. Charlotte slowly fades away and now Jack Will is all that Auggie has except for a girl named Summer and they don’t have any classes together. Auggie relies on Jack to be there for him. That is exactly what Jack does; stick with him until the very end.
Words:
Padawan- “Why do you have that tiny braid in the back of your hair. Is it like a Padawan thing?” My definition of Padawan is a reference to Star Wars. This is a Jedi apprentice. This is where we first sign we see that Auggie like Star Wars.
Alabaster Sphinx- I spray painted the whole thing white with the paint I had for the Alabaster Sphinx I was making for my project. I think it is a statue or carving in Egypt.
Inkling- “I have inkling about what might have sparked the confrontation with Julian.” I think it means the slightest clue.
Retrospect- “In retrospect, I think it may have been too much to put on our children.” I think it means going back to.
Lobot- “Look mom, I look like a Lobot.” This is another reference to Star Wars.
Visual:
For my visual presentation I made a word cloud. I chose words that were important throughout the book like Auggie, courage, school, friends, and so on. I chose the shape of the heart because I felt that love was what Auggie wanted throughout the whole story. He had the love of his family but he wanted to be able to be loved and accepted by more than that. He wanted to have friends and he accomplished that. The love of his parents and sister was the most important though. They were always there for him from day one. In and out of the hospital they were always there and Via had friends that cared about him as well.
A similar book:
This book reminds me a lot of Enders game. Ender wasn’t deformed but he was made fun and picked on for his intelligence. He could not help that he was smart and could not help that he was a third. To have a third child was a disgrace in the book and so he left the house. His parents sent him with an agent to a special school to prepare to fight the buggers as a way of redeeming themselves. Auggie could not help that he was deformed and was picked on as well. His parents sent him to school in a way to help and because he would have to deal with the people in this world some time or another. Both sets of parents sent their children away for a good purpose. In Enders Game, everyone was against Ender because he was succeeding above them. They would beat him up and it was kind of a war. Ender had very few people on his side but it seemed the whole other population of the school was against him. In Wonder, Auggie was beat up because of the way he looked like and people took sides with the bully, Julian, or Auggie. It seemed like Julian and his friends, which were a lot of people, against Auggie and his group of friends, which were around 4 people. They both toughed it out and ended up on top in the end.
Character:
August (Auggie) Pullman is the main character. He was born with a birth defect on his face and has been in and out of the hospital. When he turns 10 years old his parents enroll him in middle school. He is both excited and nervous. He knows people will laugh and whisper but he is used to it. The story is based on his school year. Via is August’s sister. She is in her first year of high school and she is very excited. She feels that she does not have the reputation of the girl with the deformed brother. She loves August very much and always protects him from the glares and snickers he gets. She plays a big role in the book because she always pushes August not to give up. Jack Will is also ten years old and is enrolled into the same school as Auggie. They first met when Mr. Tushman, the principal, set up a tour for Auggie. Jack Will had been Auggie’s friend since. They had one fight but everything was resolved and they went right back to being buddies. Jack Will is important in this story because he is the only reason, other than Via, that keeps Auggie going to school every morning.
